WEST MIDLANDS BASKETBALL LEAGUE

COMMITTEE MEETING – 2 FEBRUARY 2010

Present:- Dave Slade (Vice Chair), Andy Millington (Secretary), Keith Kershaw (Referees), Denise Kearney (Fixtures), Stephen Barnes, Zoran Pancic, Kevin Henry and Barrie Viner.

Apologies: - Mike Neal (Chair), Nigel Evans, Tony Johnson.

The minutes of the meeting
held on 12th January 2010 were approved.

There were no matters arising.

  1. Secretary (Andy Millington)


    1. Correspondence received from Lorna Tull (Mets) asking if the deadline for National League Players within her Club to have played 3 matches by 31.1.10 could be extended due to the unprecedented number of matches being cancelled due to the bad weather. The deadline for Mets Players was extended until 28.2.10.


    1. A newspaper article by Junior Hemans (Wolves CC) was passed around the Committee following his report from previous meetings regarding racism in sport.


2. Referees (Keith Kershaw)

      2.1 I need referees for games on 28th February, please contact me if you can assist.

      2.2 I will be on holiday between 3rd and 11th February inclusive and will issue the March appointments on my return.

3. Competitions Committee

      3.1 Rose Bowl & K O Shield

      The draw for the Semi-finals of both Cup competitions have been made as follows.

      Rose Bowl. Lordswood v B’ham Medics

      Wyre Forest A v David Lloyds/Shropshire Warriors A


      K .O. Shield Featherstone v Walsall Wizards B,

      Aston Sils v B’ham Mets.

      If clubs are in agreement then we will play games w/c 20th February. Denise Kearney will liaise with the relevant clubs.

      3.2 Finals Day. This will be on Sunday 25thApril 2010 at Great Barr Leisure Centre. The K O Shield will tip-off at 14.15 and the Rose Bowl at 16.15.It is anticipated that the bar will be open during the afternoon.

      3.3 League fixtures

      WM-353 Worcester University v Shropshire Warriors B. Warriors cancelled the game on the day of the game due to having insufficient transport.
      Game awarded to Worcester University 20-0. No point Shropshire Warriors B. Shropshire Warriors B fined £10 for late cancellation.

      WM -229 Wolves CC v Stoke. Stoke unable to raise a team. Game awarded to Wolves CC 20-0. No point Stoke

      B’ham Blazers & Balkan Express. At present Dame Elizabeth Cadbury sports hall is out of commission due to damage to one of the backboards.
      No date has been set for repairs; therefore we are reviewing games at this venue on a weekly basis. Both clubs are asked to find a suitable alternative venue if the problem continues so that we are able to complete
      all league fixtures by the end of April

      The following games have now been re-arranged. The fixtures agreed by clubs & inserted into match schedule.

3.4 Summer League 2010

      We are awaiting confirmation of Leasowes Sports centre accepting our booking for Tuesday evenings commencing 4th May. Once we have received this then the cost for competing clubs can be calculated.

      Applications to play in the Summer League MUST be received by 28th February in order for the event to be planned.

5. Appeals (Tony Johnson)

5.1 No appeals have been received.

5.2 WM130 Bromsgrove are fined £5 rule 6n failing to supply assessment form.

      5.3 All teams and individuals who received a trophy from the WMBL are reminded that trophies MUST be returned to the Committee by 31st
      March.

6. Any other business

      6.1 League applications 2010. Following
      the withdrawal of 75% of the new teams applying to join our league this season, a sub- committee has been set up to produce a paper which will outline the obligations ,commitments, and running costs, to any prospective new clubs, and will report at the March Committee Meeting.

      6.2 Worcester University. Contact details for Worcester Uni. Venue: The University of Worcester, Henwick Grove, Worcester. WR2 6AJ. Tip off 2pm Sunday Game, 8.15 midweek game.       6.3 League Structure 2010. In light of the current financial situation, increased court hire costs, and increasing fuel costs clubs currently in Division2
      & 3 are asked for their views on the possibility of reorganising the 2 divisions on a regional basis.

      6.4 Correspondence has been received from David Lloyds and Shropshire Warriors. The matter was discussed and replies will be sent to each club directly.

7. Date of Next Meeting

    The next Committee meeting will take place on Tuesday 2nd March 2010 in room 45 at Leasowes Sports Centre, Kent Road, Halesowen at 6.30pm prompt.
