WEST MIDLANDS BASKETBALL LEAGUE

COMMITTEE MEETING -2 JUNE 2009

The minutes of the previous meeting were read over and signed as being correct.

1. Matters Arising.

4.1 Ian Care’s address should read 13,
Croome Road, Worcester.

3.1 Fines are still outstanding from Pro Guard, Arup, Stafford hoops and Aston A’s.

Dawn Hall from Aston A’s attended last month’s meeting and assured the Committee that their fines would be cleared, this has not happened. All four teams are suspended from the West Midlands Basketball League, and will not be eligible to re-apply until ALL fines are cleared. If the teams do not rejoin next season, individual players may play for other clubs once their individual proportion of outstanding fines is cleared in line with League rules.

2. Secretary (Andy Millington)

1. An e-mail has been received from Mark Harrison regarding the outcome of the survey conducted at the beginning of the season, and asking what the information Makis produces from the Web site is being used for.

All clubs were circulated with a number of ideas from the results received, of these suggestions the secretary can report that Chase Panthers have merged with Shropshire Warriors as a way of cutting costs and Churchbridge are benefiting from a liaison with Lichfield council.

The results of the survey were taken to Mandy Pollard at English Basketball. As a result Simon Kirkland sent out funding ideas, the result of which is that two clubs have benefited to the tune of £15,000!

It is clear from the amount of fines outstanding that some club Secretaries still fail to read the Minutes, and the kind offer from Nigel Hanson and Tom Sunley to offer help in applying for funds has not been taken up. The old expression “you can take a horse to water but you can’t make it drink” would apply here.

The web site has been a great success with hits from around the world. One nice story is that a Sarah Genge living in Spain googled her late father’s name and was surprised to be linked to the WMBL web site, where a trophy was named after him. As a result Anthony Pears, her brother has
been invited to present the Stanley Pears trophy at the AGM, and a photograph of Stanley with his team has been placed in the League History page.

Several prospective teams have made contact with the League through the web site and many more prospective players have been linked to clubs.

3. Referees (Keith Kershaw)

1. Roy Harding. After many years Roy has retired form officiating in our league. We thank him for his involvement and commitment to West Midlands basketball.

4. Competitions Committee

1. Summer League. Player registration number 21391 - George Kapositas.He is registered with Warley & played on the 1^st week (games A2 & A3).On week 3 (Games A5 & A7) this registration number was used by a G Jorgos for Balkan Express. Balkan Express have used an illegal player. Game A5 awarded to Hawks 20 -0. Game A7 awarded to Shropshire Warriors 20 – 0.

A representative of Aston A’s attending the May meeting and informed the Committee that all outstanding fines would be paid within 14 days. As of the date of the June meeting nothing has been paid.

6. Any other Business

1. A review of new/amended rules submitted for consideration at the AGM were discussed by the Committee.

2. An EB level 2 Table Officials course will be held at Leasowes Sport Centre, Kent Road, Halesowen on Monday 21 Sept and Tuesday 22^nd Sept between 7-9pm. The revision period and Exam will take place on Tuesday 29^th Sept 7-9pm. Preference will be given to clubs who do not have qualified Table Officials on the basis of first come first serve. Only one applicant pre club as there are a limited number of places. The course is funded by the West Midland Area and is free to all who are selected. Please contact tony.johnson2256@yahoo.co.uk

7. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The AGM will take place on Tuesday 30 June commencing at 1915hrs at Leasowes Sports Centre Theatre, and will be followed by the Summer League Final. All teams must be represented.

8. Date of Next Meeting

The next Committee meeting will take place on Tuesday 9^thJuly 2009 in Room 45 at Leasowes Sports Centre, Kent Road, Halesowen at 6.30pm prompt.
