BASKETBALL LEAGUE

COMMITTEE
MEETING – 4 NOVEMBER 2008

Present: Mike Neal (Chair), Dave Slade (Vice Chair), Andy Millington (Secretary) Denise Kearney (Fixture Changes), Tony Johnson (Appeals), Makis Chatzmichallis (Media Manager), Kevin Henry, Roy Francis, Barrie Viner, Nigel Evans, Zoran Pancic and John Taylor.

Apologies: Jim Smith, Steve Barnes, Keith Kershaw (Referees) and Jane Huffer (Treasurer)

Changes to 2008/09 handbook

Referee details have been updated on the website.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read over and signed as being correct.

  1. Matters Arising


      2.4 Barrie Viner reported that neither of the player mentioned, Jonathan Brown and Sam (Pac) Richards have been in contact with him, the monies owed remain unpaid. As such they are still suspended from participating within the West midlands League.

      7.0 Only Aston Sills and Wolves CC have returned the Trophy agreement form and the fine imposed last month. Stafford Hoops have returned the form but the fine remains outstanding. All outstanding fines are increased by 50% as per rule 6j. If the fine and forms are not returned by 21.11.08 a further fine of £15 will be levied on these clubs under rule 6k, for failing to reply to Committee correspondence.

  1. Secretary’s Report (Andy Millington)


      • 2.1 Pro Guard Pacers Div 2 have withdrawn from the League with immediate effect. A question was raised by John Griffiths from Pro Guard as to whether the remaining players could participate in the Rosebowl. The matter was discussed but it was felt that as Pro Guard Pistons had forfeited the first round they would not be allowed to replace Pacers.
          • 2.2 The following people have transferred from one team to another. There are
            no monies outstanding and the transfers have been approved:-

            Steve Hewkin - Barton to Churchbridge

            Joe Tang - Aston Uni to Aston Sills

            Seye Onabolu - Aston Sills to Aston Uni

            Gavin Morris - Pro Guard to West Mids Police

          • 2.3 Scoresheets are being received by the Results Secretary incomplete. Please ensure that all details at the top of the scoresheet are completed especially the match number. Referees are asked to check scoresheets are complete. The following discrepancies have been found:

            WM 021 Aston Athletics V West Mids Police – no registration number for G. Branch (Aston A’s) – Aston A’s are fined £5. Rule 6ci refers.

            WM 046 Aston University V Pro Guard – no registration numbers for either team – both teams fined £5. Rule 6ci refers.

            WM049. Aston University V Warley B – no registration number for K. Simeon (Warley) – Warley B fined £5. Rule 6ci refers.

            WM027. Chase B V Barton – no registration numbers for Barton. Barton are fined £5. Rule 6ci refers.

            WM010. WF Flames V Arup – no registration numbers for Arup. Arup are fined £5. Rule 6cii refers.

            WM 001 Smithswood V Aston A’s – Aston fielded 6 players at the match on the 5 Oct 08 who were not registered with English Basketball until the 13 Oct 08. Match awarded 20-0 to Smithswood with the loss of 1 point against Aston A’s, who are also fined £20. Rule 6cii refers.

            WM024 Walsall Wizards B v Warley C – Match played on 14.10.08 scoresheet not received to date. Walsall are fined £25.00. Rule 6biii refers.


            2.4 Arup Campus have informed the League Committee that due to damage to a backboard, which will not be repaired until Christmas, they have had to seek new premises at The Arden School, Station Road, Knowle, Solihull B93 0PT. Matches will be played on a Friday with a 1945hrs tip off. All teams
            have already been informed and the website updated.

          3. Referees Secretary (Keith Kershaw)

          1. Licence numbers. Will all referees please let me know their licence number. This applies to those officials who have a National League licence, and to those who have a playing licence.


          1. November appointments are now with Officials and on the website. Please note that the website may not be up to date.


          3.3 December draft appointments will be sent out by 14 November.

            3.4 I am extremely disappointed with certain Officials who, after receiving 2 months appointments tell me they are no longer available on certain days & expect me to re-arrange their appointments.

          1. Stoke Heath handicap has been re-assessed and approved by the Management Committee.


          1. Will all home clubs ensure they have their sports hall reserved for these fixtures?

            Please allow plenty of time for travelling if you are visiting an unfamiliar venue.


        7. Media Manager (Makis Chatzimichallis)

            7.1 No teams have come forward with details of their junior development programme for the website.

          7.2 Makis produced a flow chart showing the use of the website – attached.

        8. Any Other Business

            8.1 The Committee wish to reiterate the procedure for cancelling matches. This should be done through Denise Kearney on 0121
            501 1571 or 07905 245295.

            8.2 Tony Johnson expressed his disappointment with West Midlands Fire Service who appear to have reneged on their sponsorship offer. It would appear that they were considering another League without informing West Mids Basketball. Tony has tried to make contact but they have failed
            to reply. The Secretary will attempt to gain some response from West Midlands Fire Service.

            8.3 John Taylor drew his concerns about the costs of fielding teams within the League, and it was decided that the Secretary would produce a questionnaire to be circulated to teams to gauge the costs and feelings of teams participating in this League.

        9. Date of Next Meeting

          The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 2 December 2008 in room 45 at Leasowes Sports Centre, Kent Road, Halesowen at 6.30pm prompt.
